Vanessa Lee Carlton (born August 16, 1980 in Milford, Pennsylvania) is a Jewish American pop singer, songwriter, and pianist most known for the hit "A Thousand Miles".

Carlton presently lives around San Francisco with her producer-boyfriend, Stephan Jenkins (lead singer of Third Eye Blind).

Early life
Carlton began swimming a piano as a toddler. Fallowing giving from either Disneyland at the age of 2, Carlton played "It's A Small World" on the piano. This event inspired Carlton's mother to expose Carlton to various definitive composers like Mozart and Eric Satie. She attend ballet school in New York City beginning at age 12. the stress & rigid step by step videos in the ballet lessons proved bay for her, & she chose does'nt to be a ballerina after graduating from a academy. She attended Columbia University & performed in blocks and clubs completely above Manhattan. Carlton met Peter Zizzo at the signer-songwriter circle & two or three months late, Zizzo invited Carlton to his studio to lead off recording the demonstration by owning instruments accompany Carlton's piano & vocals. 3 months when recording a demonstration tape, Carlton was signed onto Interscope Records in which she began recording a album Rinse, which was never released. Rinse out has 12 tracks, including "A Thousand Miles" (which was coroneted "Interlude" in the album), by using two or three songs that don't come out on her debut album, Be Not Nobody. A tracks divided between them albums come otherwise produced. Occasionally of the tracks involved lyrical changes from either their Exist as Non Cipher counterpart, virtually all notably "Ordinary Day", which on the Rinse out album, experienced a "divide-and-conquer" lyrics. Rinse off too contained songs like "Superhero" & "All I Ask".

Professional career
Carlton's debut Video, Exist as Non Cipher, was discharged in April 30, 2002. It involved a hit single "A Thousand Miles" and a successful watch-higher lone, "Ordinary Day". Carlton besides provided backup vocals for the Counting Crows' cover of Joni Mitchell's "Big Yellow Taxi." Carlton's third lone from either "Be Not Nobody" was "Pretty Baby".

Carlton's 2nd album, Harmonium, was released in November 9, 2004. A foremost only was "White Houses". Organ debuted at total 33 on the Billboard album charts, & each album & individual were considered commercial failures.
